I experienced several years of significant behavioral challenges with my two sons. Over time, these issues escalated and developed into identifiable mental health conditions, substance use disorders (addiction), and entanglements with both juvenile and adult criminal justice systems.

After being a single mother for seven years, I remarried. My new husband also encountered his own challenges in adapting to his role as a step-parent. I spent numerous years as a Special Education teacher, working with students with special needs across grade school, middle school, and high school. For many of the younger students, I utilized positive reinforcement to help transform their self-defeating habits. With the high school students, I acted as a mentor, guiding them to acknowledge that their maladaptive behaviors were leading to negative consequences. Over time, they learned to adopt alternative strategies that yielded positive results.

For the past 14 years, I have passionately championed criminal justice reform. During this time, I initiated a support group in Whatcom County aimed at assisting individuals with incarcerated loved ones, as well as those reintegrating after incarceration. This group remains active to this day.
